In a follow-up to it’s 2011 report on British identity, think tank DEMOS recently published a further review “A Place for Pride 2026”, that reveals a sharp national decline in institutional trust and patriotism.

  • British Citizenship: Pride in being a British citizen has fallen sharply from 74% to 47% during the 15 year interval.
  • Global Standing: Pride in Britain's place in the world has fallen dramatically, from 35% to 13%.
  • National Institutions: Trust and pride has collapsed, notably for Parliament (down from 23% to -11%) and the BBC (down from 48% to -11%). Pride in the monarchy has also declined, from 54% to 25%.

Surprisingly these declines contrast with a modest rise in pride in local community connections, and how people feel about the wider UK state.

The full report can be read online and will doubtless fuel future Lentune Probus discussions.
