On 1th May 2026, Lentune Probus Club was privileged to hear an illuminating talk on the Christian charity An Afrcan Dream, given by Sophie Campbell-Wynter.
After training as a nurse and midwife, Sophie practiced briefly, before starting with her new husband Mark as missionaries in a remote part of western Uganda, close to the Congolese border. The premature death of her husband catapulted her into helping to found an primary school in the area (primary covering ages between 8 and 16, because of the local culture). This primary school has trained students for university level education, and its building doubles as the local clinic.
Interestingly, most of the photographs of students were of girls, although the featured university graduate was male. The school provides basic uniforms, due to the poverty in the area. Nevertheless, everybody appeared to be very happy.
The talk also covered everyday life in Uganda, a huge country with long distance transport by bus.
Overall, a surprisingly interesting talk covering an area of Africa which few (if any) of us have visited.
