Birdwatching is popular and members who study our feathered friends will be interested in the results of recent research showing that birds react differently to men and women.
An international team of scientists studied 37 species of urban birds in 5 different European countries. They discovered birds fear women more than men. But the research hasn’t established why!
The study involved precise measurement of “flight initiation distance”, the point at which birds took flight when approached by men and women. Findings were consistent across all cities and bird species.
Researcher were of similar height and build and hid their hair if it was of different length. Exactly how the birds distinguished between men and women remains a mystery.
Researchers ruled-out height and body size, but thought birds might still be able to detect subtle differences in the appearance of male and female humans. Or their odour!
Any ideas?
