Rosemarie Tiffin - From GCE's to the Judiciary
Rosemarie Tiffin is a retired Asylum and Immigration judge. She left school aged 16 and applied to join the Law Society, with a view to becoming an articled clerk. Her application was reluctantly accepted, by what was then a male dominated organisation, with the proviso that she passed her Law Society exams and gained as good a standard as her male colleagues. She achieved this with distinction.
Rosemarie then set-up her own law firm in Romford, which she ran successfully for 17 years, during which time she became President of the local Law Society. She was then approached to become a Judge and, with a strong interest in human rights, applied to join the Court of Asylum and Human Rights.
Synopsis
Rosemarie's talk will explain how she climbed the Judicial ladder from such an unconventional start as well as providing an outline of the role and challenges of the Tribunal, in dealing with the rapidly increasing numbers of asylum applications in the UK.
