Mick Monaghan MBE is our speaker today.

Mick is a retired Royal Navy officer with 31-years service. After leaving the Navy he worked for Hewlett Packard for 17 years, as a senior manager in their Personnel & Veterans Agency.

He retired age 62 and with his wife bought a small farm with holiday cottages in Devon. Family circumstances brought them back to the South Coast in 2011.

Always an adventurer and constantly wanting to test himself, Mick's achievements include running the Freedom Trail across the Pyrenees, trekking the deepest canyon on the planet (the Cotahuasi in Peru) and participating in 10km runs to raise funds for the RNLI.

He was awarded an MBE in 2009 for charitable services to ex-servicemen and women.

In his talk today, Mick will describe one of his toughest challenges: competing in the Marathon Des Sables to raise funds for St Dunstans, a charity providing care and support for those who have served their country and subsequently suffered from blindness or severe visual impairment.
